Juneteenth...

Juneteenth events recognize the day, June 19, 1865 when enslaved African-Americans in Texas first got word that they had been freed. On September 22, 1862 President Abraham Lincoln signed the Proclamation which took over two years before generals landed on Galveston Bay to render the news. 146 years ago this year, marks the day that Union General Gordon Granger and about 2,000 federal troops (some black union soldiers from the north), to ensure that the freeing of the enslaved Africans on plantations in America’s South

Many of the formerly enslaved persons migrated from the plantations on along the Brazos River to Houston. Once they reached Houston, they wasted little time coming together and getting organized. A historic neighborhood called, “Freedman’s Town” was erected and was where Blacks from Houston lived. Freedman’s Town, named to describe them being “Free Men,” was located in an areas of Houston designated as the “Fourth ward."
As the freed Blacks began to build their own community and establish churches, businesses and school, they decided they should began to recognize the day they were freed. The legendary Reverend Jack Yates and other community leaders then decided that they should start a celebration for all the freed Africans and do it on Juneteenth. They needed a space. During that time, blacks did not receive any resources from the government and would not receive equal access until the ’60s and the passage of the Civil Rights Act. This meant that the Freedmen would have to provide for their own space if they wanted to hold a large gathering, as they were not allowed to use any public space or park to convene a celebration.

In light of needed an appropriate space, Yates and the other leaders from his church pooled together and raised enough money ($800) to purchase 10 acres of land for a park named Emancipation Park. Blacks came from near and far to gather, eat watermelon, barbeque and drink “red soda pop.” Emancipation is still the local site for a week long celebration in Houston’s Third Ward, today. In fact, Juneteenth celebrations happen in black communities across America with Milwaukee and Minneapolis reportedly as the two largest community events.

Now, there are some in the African-American community that refuse to talk about or think about Juneteenth, as if it is not something that should be noted in history. To them I say, the founding days of the union should not be forgotten, the Native American should never be forgotten and same goes for the Holocaust. It’s okay to celebrate a moment in our history when our America became a “more perfect” union! God Bless the Abolitionists (who were both black and white), God Bless the bravery of Jack Yates and all the Freedmen that sought to build a space for blacks in Houston and God Bless America! Happy Juneteenth 2011 – Never Forget.

Happy Birthday Tupac

The month of June marks many big annual events that let us know it’s time to celebrate. We can always be sure June will provide us with the NBA and NHL finals, the end of school, the start of summer and more importantly to me, June is the month hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur was born.

Tupac Amaru Shakur was born June 16, 1971 and his tragic death was September 13, 1996 after being shot four times on September 7, 1996 (my 12th birthday) in downtown Las Vegas. Tupac wore many hats as a rapper, actor and political activist. Shakur took his career from being a back-up dancer to the group Digital Underground to one of the best-selling music artists in the world, selling over 85 million records worldwide. He released classics such as “Hail Mary,” “Hit ‘em up,” “California Love,” “Me and My Girlfriend,” “All Eyez on Me” and many more.

Tupac was well-known for his aggressive lyrics and Thug-Life mentality, which set him apart as one of this generation’s most powerful leaders. His music reflected the hardship, racism and violence that African- Americans have faced since the early 1600s and still exists today.

Tupac would be 40 today RIP Pac

Lebron James wants his haters to know this ...

After the Miami Heat loss to the Dallas Mavericks for the championship last night, LeBron James had a few words for everyone who was rooting for him to fail...
LeBron says,

“All the people that were rooting me on to fail, at the end of the day they have to wake up tomorrow and have the same life they had before. They have the same personal problems they had to today. I’m going to continue to live the way I want to live and continue to do the things that I want with me and my family and be happy with that.”

on a side note , i heard Cleveland is having a parade because Miami Heat didnt win , i personally like Lebron and think he is a great ball player have alot of respect for him ..I know alot of folks hate on my boy Kobe as well ..so maybe all the Kobe haters will see how it feels to have your favorite player hated by so many its just a game people and at the end of the day Lebron is right they all go home to millions of dollars , although he could have worded it differently lmao

Mo & Kita not feeling Evelyn Lozada

For T.O.'s handlers, Mo and Kita, Evelyn Lozada is a non-mothertf*#king factor. When asked their opinion of Chad Ochocinco's fiancée, Mo and Kita didn't have too many kind words to say about about the "Basketball Wives" star.
"We already know that she is the ‘non-motherf*#in’ factor.’ We’re clear on that, right?" Mo told HipHollywood.com. "And more than not, what she reminds me of is a walking yeast infection, ’cause everybody’s had one."
"She's the NMFF," Kita co-signed.
But Mo didn't stop there. Chad and T.O. are good friends, so she called her associate out on his suspect decision-making when proposing to Evelyn.
"Don’t get me wrong, I know Chad. I’ve associated with Chad. I’ve worked with Chad," Mo said, "but at the same time he’s sending the wrong message to women, to guys, thinking it’s ‘okay’ to wife somebody that you’ve portrayed the image of sleeping with all in the same night."
And Mo really doesn't think that Evelyn is setting a good example for her daughter, who is now old enough to date. But the biggest reason she takes issue with Evelyn is her flippant attitude towards sleeping with Tami Roman's ex-husband Kenny Anderson.
"She pretended to be this chick’s friend. I don’t care if it was a month, a week, or a day," Mo said of Tami and Evelyn's relationship, adding that Tami had every right to break nasty on her castmate. "Oh, Tami should have beat her @$s."

Ernestine Shepard ...Inspiring

Ernestine “Ernie” Shepherd, at age 74, is a personal trainer, a professional model, a competitive bodybuilder and happier and more fulfilled than she’s ever been in her life. In March of 2010, on stage in Rome, Italy she was formally given the title of World’s Oldest Performing Female BodyBuilder (by Guinness World Records). How did Ernestine transform herself from an average middle-aged woman to bodybuilding divi

In her youth Ernestine is said to have been a ”prissy” girl with little interest in athletics or exercise of any kind. As a 56-year-old she was a sedentary, well-padded school secretary and “slug” who had never worked out a day in her life. The obvious question is: What happened to transform Ernestine into a role model for the rest of us, and senior women in particular?

What happened was that the 56-year-old version of Ernestine went bathing suit shopping with her sister, Velvet. While trying on the suits, they found themselves laughing at each other. Then and there they knew it was time to get in better shape. Ernestine and her sister joined a gym and started working out together. A short time later, Velvet died suddenly from a brain aneurysm. Devastated, Ernestine stopped going to the gym. After some months of mourning the loss of her sister and on the advice of a friend that her sister would have wanted her to continue what they had started, Ernestine returned to the gym with a reignited determination to get fit.

Starting slowly and building her body step by little step, Ernestine over time completely transformed not only her body, but her life, too. She has never been happier. She trains mostly senior women five days a week and “live(s) to inspire senior women to reach their physical potential.”

Personally, she likes to compete in 5K and 10K races and run marathons. She’s up at 4 A.M. to get in her 10-mile runs and puts in upwards to 80 miles a week when training for an upcoming marathon. Ernestine also strength trains four or more days a week. In 2007 (at age 72) she asked Yohnnie Shambourger (former Mr. Universe) to train her to compete as a bodybuilder. Seven months later she entered her first bodybuilding competition. In this first contest she took first place in her class at the Natural East Coast Tournament of Champions bodybuilding competition – out posing women decades younger.

Despite all the exercise, Ernestine says that she has no aches or pains whatsoever and has never been injured — not at all — in the 17 years of her new improved life. This 5-foot 5-inch, 130-pound dynamo sports 9 to 10% bodyfat; these single-digit percentages are usually reserved for elite-professional male athletes in their prime! She takes no medications. She loves her new life’s work, enjoys more energy than those decades younger and has never been more successful.

Its never too late, i'm starting today

alittle friday politics

President Barack Obama’s approval ratings have increased to 54 percent, which is up from 48 percent in early April. According to the recent CNN poll, it is mainly due to his foreign policy. However, the battle for 2012 will mostly be about the economy, which only 41 percent of the people polled approved of how he is handling the economy .

*Debt ceiling battle:  The House on Tuesday rejected a debt ceiling increase in a 318-97 vote. This vote was a symbolic one meant to send a message to budget negotiators.  President Obama responded by meeting with House Republicans on Wednesday and House Democrats on Thursday. Agreement over raising the debt ceiling is still far off and the authority to borrow under the $14.29 trillion debt limit will expire on Aug. 2.
 * John Edwards , breaking news Friday that former Democratic vice-presidential nominee John Edwards has been indicted by a grand jury on six counts, including conspiracy, issuing false statements and violating campaign contribution laws. He faces up to 30 years in prison and a maximum fine of $1.5 million if found guilty. The grand jury has been investigating that money given to support his mistress, Rielle Hunter, whom he had a child with, by benefactors of Edwards, should have been considered campaign donations. Edwards plead not guilty this morning (CNN).
